Elizabeth (Betty) Ross Dickson died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born May 23, 1930, in Pleasant Garden, NC, she was the eldest child of the late Nancy Coleman and Guy Matthews Ross.
Betty received a BS degree from Woman’s College (UNCG) in 1952 and was employed as a secretary in the Department of Surgery in the newly opened North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. In 1953 she married Dr. Griggs Cameron Dickson. The Dicksons made Charlotte their home in 1963.
A life-long Methodist, Betty was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She served as president and as a board member of the Charlotte Nature Museum and was a supporter of Discovery Place. Mrs. Dickson was a member of the UNCG Alumni Association, and secretary of the Coleman-Feaster-Mobley Family Association. Family and friends fondly remember Betty as an avid bridge player and an accomplished seamstress and prolific needleworker.
In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by her three children: Polly Dickson, Chapel Hill; Ross Dickson and wife, Diane Grady Dickson; Michael Dickson, Myrtle Beach, SC; granddaughters Sarah and Margaret Dickson; brothers: Guy Ross, Little Switzerland; Coleman Ross, West Simsbury, CT; and sister, Nancy Jo Smith, Pleasant Garden; as well as an extended family of numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
